Professional Organizer

So Where Do I Start?
so where do i start 1 scaled

Don't be afraid. Nancy can help create more calm and less chaos.

Sometimes we are overwhelmed by our stuff…it seems like everywhere we turn there is more things that are not where they should be, and it becomes scary to even think of where to begin. I get asked that all the time! A systematic approach can be the easiest way to deal with what, in our mind, is a daunting task! Remember what we told our children? Let’s start with small steps! This is where a professional organizer can give you some perspective. Here’s a way to add a little bit of structure to your plan:

A. WHAT’S WORKING IN THIS AREA?

This is the first thing I ask my cloens. What do you like about this area (it could be something simple like “I love the natural light in here”, or “ I actually love the furniture”, or even (think storage room or garage), “I like that there are already shelves here”. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering, but every area has a positive—a professional can help you notice it.

B. WHAT ONE THING CAN I DO RIGHT NOW?

It may be something simple like moving a box or two. Or clearing a space to sort items to work with. It may be Setting up a sorting system with boxes, bags, or bins. What one thing can you do right now to get the ball rolling? Start there. It doesn’t have to be done in one day, start with an hour, or two….start small, and build on your successes.

C. WHAT ‘S THE OBJECTIVE FOR THIS AREA?

Is it creating a space for something specific (I.e. parking a car in the garage, clearing out an extra bedroom for guests, organizing kitchen and pantry items to make them easier to find, getting your child’s toys off the floor so they can find them easier…you get it). It’s really helpful here to WRITE THIS OBJECTIVE DOWN and keep it somewhere you can see it. It helps maintain focus a little bit.

D. Last but not least…WHO CAN I GET TO HELP ME WITH THIS?

.. A buddy, a family member, or someone like me, a professional can help with fresh eyes, encouragement when you need it, and lots and lots of laughter (do NOT pick someone crabby for this part, LOL). Remember, Everything is easier when you share it with someone. If you have a friend or family member who doesn’t live with you that can help, the job is MUCH easier, and you can return the favor when they need it.

No matter how much you get done at a time, what you accomplished is important. Remember, it’s NOT about the stuff….
